What the service aims to do
- Introduce a researcher, a team or a discovery through storytelling.
- Reach audiences who would not read an article.
- Put a face to research.
- Explain a difficult idea through pictures and dialogue.
- Create something people share, print and exhibit.
In practice
Comics combine narrative, characters and explanation. They work just as well for portraying a researcher as for explaining a phenomenon, and they circulate easily online, at trade fairs or in exhibitions.
Cortex writes the script from interviews with your researchers, then hands it to an illustrator from its pool. Each stage is reviewed by the researchers concerned. For Unys, we produced portrait comics, including “Le cycle du soufre” (The sulphur cycle), about a CNRS researcher in isotope biogeochemistry.
How we work
- Interview with the researcher or researchers.
- Writing the script and breaking it down into pages.
- Choice of illustrator and graphic style.
- Pencils, then inking and colour.
- Scientific review at every stage.
- Delivery of the pages and their adapted versions; translation available.
Who is involved
- Scriptwriters specialising in science communication.
- Illustrators from our pool.
- The researchers concerned, for validation.
